Gender Reveal Balloons and Box: How to Set Up the Reveal

Step-by-step gender reveal box setup: who fills it so you stay surprised, how many balloons fit, helium math, weights and timing, plus a no-helium option.

A gender reveal balloon box works when three things go right: someone other than the parents fills it, the balloons have enough lift to rise out cleanly, and they’re filled close enough to party time that they still float. Below is the full setup, from the sealed envelope to the moment you lift the lid, with the rough helium math party guides skip and a no-helium version for when a tank isn’t an option.

Step 1: Hand the secret to one person

The box only surprises the parents if they never see the result. Ask your clinic for the sex in a sealed envelope, give it to one trusted friend, and let that friend do everything below: ordering, filling and taping the box shut.

A few spoiler traps to avoid:

  • Online orders. Item names such as “pink balloons” show up in shared email and order notifications. The friend should order on their own account.
  • Party-store receipts. If the store fills the balloons, the friend picks them up.
  • Group chats. Keep the secret-keeper out of any chat the parents can see until after the reveal.

If you don’t have a medical result yet, our guide on when you can find out the gender explains the options, from a blood test at 10 weeks to the anatomy scan.

Step 2: Choose the box and the balloons

The box. Pre-printed reveal boxes with “BOY OR GIRL?” on the sides are sold online and in party stores, but a plain moving box wrapped in white paper with a big question mark works just as well. Make sure the flaps open upward and the box can be opened by two people at once.

The balloons. Mix sizes and shades so the cloud looks full:

  • 11-inch latex balloons as the base;
  • a few 5-inch balloons to fill gaps;
  • one large confetti-filled clear balloon for sparkle;
  • optional foil letters or a foil heart, which hold helium longer than latex.

How many fit? Rough geometry: an 11-inch balloon is about 28 cm across, so a 24-inch cube box (about 61 cm a side) holds roughly six to ten without crushing them. A 36-inch box holds two to three times that. Over-stuffing makes balloons snag on the flaps and pop.

Step 3: Do the helium math

Helium lifts about one gram per liter of gas at sea level, the difference between the weight of air and helium. A fully inflated 11-inch latex balloon holds roughly 11 to 12 liters, so its lift is around 11 grams, minus the weight of the balloon and ribbon. In practice, that’s only a few grams of spare lift per balloon, which is why:

  • Long curly ribbons can drag balloons down. Keep ribbons short or skip them inside the box.
  • Confetti balloons need to be bigger. A 36-inch balloon holds many times the gas of an 11-inch one and can carry a handful of tissue confetti.
  • Under-filled balloons won’t rise. Fill to the full size printed on the packet.

These are approximate figures; a party store can tell you exactly what their balloons carry.

Timing. Latex helium balloons lose lift over hours, so fill them on the day, ideally within a few hours of the party. Foil balloons hold helium for days. A balloon sealant gel, sold at party stores, helps latex last longer.

Temperature. Heat makes balloons expand and cold makes them shrink. Don’t leave a filled box in a hot car, and bring it indoors until the last moment on a cold day.

Step 4: Weigh it down and keep every balloon

Two kinds of weight matter.

  1. Weigh down the box. Outdoors, a gust can lift or tip an empty-looking box. Tape a bag of sand or a book to the inside bottom.
  2. Tether the balloons. Tie each ribbon to a small weight on the floor of the box, or tape the ribbon ends to the bottom, so the balloons rise in a column and stay put.

Tethering also keeps balloons out of the sky. Released balloons come down as litter, and some states now penalize releases: Florida made intentionally releasing lighter-than-air balloons outdoors a littering offense in 2024 (HB 321).

With small children around, collect popped pieces quickly. US rules require latex balloons to carry a choking warning for children under 8 (16 CFR 1500.19).

Step 5: The moment itself

  • Position the box with open space above it: no low branches, ceiling fans or string lights.
  • Each parent holds one flap and lifts on a countdown.
  • Film from the side and slightly below, so the camera catches faces and rising balloons together. A second phone filming the guests is a bonus.
  • Have a backup. A cupcake with colored filling, held by the secret-keeper, saves the moment if the balloons disappoint.

No helium? Two other ways to do it

Balloons that hang from the lid. Tape air-filled balloons on short ribbons to the inside of the lid. When the parents lift the lid straight up, the balloons swing out underneath it. No tank, no timing stress.

A digital box on your phone. If you aren’t finding out the sex yet, SeeMyBaby’s gender reveal party puts a gift box with foil “BOY OR GIRL” balloons on your iPhone. You pull the ribbon, a drumroll plays and the lid opens on pink or blue balloons and confetti. It’s a playful AI guess, just for fun, not a medical result, so use it as a game while you wait, not as your real announcement.

Questions parents ask

How far in advance can I fill gender reveal balloons with helium?

Fill latex balloons on the day, ideally a few hours before the reveal. Foil balloons can be filled a day or more ahead.

Can a party store fill the box so we don’t see the color?

Yes. Give the sealed envelope to a friend, who orders the balloons and has the store fill them. Ask the store to pack them straight into the box or into a bag that hides the color.

How do you keep balloons from flying away at a gender reveal?

Tie each ribbon to a weight or tape the ends to the inside of the box, so the balloons rise but stay attached.

What can I use instead of a balloon box?

A cake with colored filling, a piñata or air-powered confetti poppers all work. Our list of simple gender reveal ideas has low-cost options.
